SUMMARY:Webinar: Europe Calling ‘Hazardous – How Russia uses nuclear power as leverage’
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nNuclear power is often sold as a ‘reliable’ component of the energy system. However\, in the current geopolitical environment\, it is clearer than ever that ‘security of supply’ in nuclear power is not just a question of reactor output\, but also of security and dependency chains\, and that Russia plays a special role in this: as a warring party in Ukraine\, as the occupier of a nuclear power plant\, and as a global player in the nuclear fuel cycle. \nRussia plays a central role in the global nuclear fuel cycle and is particularly well positioned in the field of uranium enrichment\, controlling almost half of all enrichment capacity\, for example. This strong position makes Russia an important player in several stages of the nuclear supply chain. \nThe Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been under Russian control since 2022 and is managed by Rosatom. It is not currently producing electricity\, but requires a stable external power supply for cooling and safety systems – which has become very challenging since the destruction of the dam at the Kakhovka reservoir\, which supplies cooling water\, in 2023. Repeated damage and interruptions to pipelines increase the risk of serious accidents. \nThis dependency is not only an economic problem\, but also poses geopolitical and security risks. It affects not only prices and supply volumes\, but also creates potential risks of sanctions\, blackmail and failure. \nIn addition\, when we discuss this important topic with our panel of experts: \n\nTatiana Kasperski\, researcher at Södertörn University in Stockholm.
