PRESS RELEASE, Wednesday, 13th of May 2020 – Brussels

European Parliament votes for new tyre labelling regulation – abrasion and mileage of tyres finally get on the label!

Today the European Parliament adopted the new EU Tyre Labelling Regulation. As soon as a validated test method is available, mileage and abrasion of microplastics must be labelled. In the EU, more than 500,000 tons of microplastics from tyre abrasion end up in the environment every year.

Jutta Paulus, responsible MEP for the regulation in the Greens/EFA group comments:

„We Greens in the European Parliament have fought long and hard and finally succeeded: we achieved that microplastics from tyre abrasion must finally be labelled. The mileage of tyres must also be indicated on the label. This will enable consumers to save money and at the same time minimise the pollution caused by microplastics. This will give industry an incentive to improve its products as quickly as possible. That is only the beginning. All sources of microplastics, but also nanoplastics, must be tackled if we are seriously aiming to combat pollution from plastics.”
