Dear friends, dear interested,
When I ran for the European Parliament in 2019, I had announced that I would devote a great deal of attention to the issue of chemicals policy in Europe and a toxic-free environment. In the meantime, we have succeeded in getting the European Parliament to commit itself to this goal with an ambitious resolution on chemicals policy and to make clear demands on the European Commission and the Member States. The Commission’s European Green Deal also contains far-reaching measures for a sustainable chemicals policy. At its heart is the zero-pollution objective for protecting the environment and consumers. Parliament also points the way forward for the European chemical industry.
The chemicals sector should not be treated in the same way as other key European industries. The best, because sustainable products must continue to be produced in Europe. The ambitious sustainable chemicals policy called for by the European Parliament is, therefore, an opportunity for the industry to invest in future-proof and crisis-proof innovations. A change in the chemical industry is about nothing less than the chemical industry’s withdrawal from fossil raw materials and energy sources, consistent recycling management and an end to the release of toxic and hormone-disrupting chemicals into the environment.
As part of the European Green Deal, the EU Commission will present a future and sustainability strategy for chemicals. It is now crucial that the EU Commission takes Parliament’s demands seriously and does not give in now in the face of opposition from some backwards-looking chemical industry associations and companies.
Before the Commission presents its draft strategy in September, we want to discuss our Green priorities for a change in chemicals with EU Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius and top-representatives from the chemical industry council, civil society and other guests in an online conference. More than 700 people have already registered in advance for this important conference on the transformation of the chemical industry! I am preparing the conference together with Sven Giegold MEP.
