ReFuelEUAviation: Rotten compromise in the Transport Committee on sustainable fuels in aviation

The Transport Committee of the European Parliament has just voted on sustainable fuels in aviation (ReFuelEUAviation). The recommendations of the environment and industry committees were ignored by the transport committee and instead, a majority adopted a position that is at odds with the EU climate targets. The Greens/EFA group therefore voted against the Transport Committee’s position. Next, it is up to the plenary of the European Parliament to vote on the future design of sustainable fuels.

MEP and climate politician Jutta Paulus, member of the Environment Committee and deputy member of the Industry and Energy Committee and the Transport Committee, comments:

“The Transport Committee of the European Parliament adopts a rotten compromise on sustainable fuels in aviation that fails to meet climate targets. A majority of the transport committee backs the use of non-sustainable biofuels and advocates that airplanes in 2050 still be fuelled with 37 percent fossil kerosene. Private jets are to receive a number of exemptions, to the delight of the super-rich. The European Parliament must stop this rotten compromise, which is at odds with the European Green Deal and the EU climate law. Sustainable fuels in aviation can only be sustainable if they are in line with climate goals.”
